Galectin-3とは

Increasing attention is being paid towards reducing short-term heart failure readmissions in recent years. Biomarkers such as galectin-3 are likely to play pivotal roles in future heart failure management strategies as they can provide objective information on various pathophysiologic processes involved in heart failure. Galectin-3 is a biomarker of inflammation and fibrosis, which is strongly associated with adverse remodeling of the myocardium and subsequent left ventricular dysfunction. Clinically, elevated galectin-3 levels are associated with increased risk for short- and long-term risk for mortality and heart failure readmission. Galectin-3 can provide incremental predictive value for adverse events over natriuretic peptides. Although significant work is still required to further define the role of galectin-3, it has the potential to become an important part of future heart failure management algorithms by helping to provide an individualized risk profile, which can be used to optimize resource allocation and improve treatment outcomes.

Serum Albuminとは

Serum albumin is the most abundant blood plasma protein and is produced in the liver and forms a large proportion of all plasma protein. The human version is human serum albumin, and it normally constitutes about 60% of human plasma protein.
Serum albumins are important in regulating blood volume by maintaining the oncotic pressure (also known as colloid osmotic pressure) of the blood compartment. They also serve as carriers for molecules of low water solubility this way isolating their hydrophobic nature, including lipid soluble hormones, bile salts, unconjugated bilirubin, free fatty acids (apoprotein), calcium, ions (transferrin), and some drugs like warfarin, phenobutazone, clofibrate & phenytoin. For this reason, it's sometimes referred as a molecular "taxi". Competition between drugs for albumin binding sites may cause drug interaction by increasing the free fraction of one of the drugs, thereby affecting potency.

AGR3／AGR2とは

The Anterior Gradient (AGR) genes AGR2 and AGR3 are part of the Protein Disulfide Isomerase (PDI) family and harbour core thioredoxin folds (CxxS motifs) that have the potential to regulate protein folding and maturation. A number of proteomics and transcriptomics screens in the fields of limb regeneration, cancer cell metastasis, pro-oncogenic oestrogen-signalling, and p53 regulation have identified AGR2 as a novel component of these signalling pathways. Curiously, despite the fact that the AGR2 and AGR3 genes are contiguous on chromosome 7p21.1-3, the AGR3 protein has rarely been identified in such OMICs screens along with AGR2 protein. Therefore there is little information on how AGR3 protein is expressed in normal and diseased states.

ESM1とは

ESM1 is a secreted protein which is mainly expressed in the endothelial cells in human lung and kidney tissues. The expression of this gene is regulated by cytokines, suggesting that it may play a role in endothelium-dependent pathological disorders. The transcript contains multiple polyadenylation and mRNA instability signals. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. ESM1 also is secreted adipokine. Circulating ESM-1 levels increased significantly, albeit modestly. ESM-1 is actively produced by adipocytes. However, since ESM-1 adipocyte gene expression and circulating plasma levels are not correlated, other sources of ESM-1 may be more important. Circulating ESM-1 levels are reduced in the overweight and obese, consistent with the notion that ESM-1 may play some role in obesity-associated vascular disease.
